What is Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy refers to the use of light, usually in the range of 630-850nm for photobiomodulation. Often red light therapy is delivered in conjunction with near-infrared light to further assist with cell health.

Exposing your cells to red light and near-infrared light activates an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase which helps each of your cells more efficiently make energy. This action also helps to balance many other pro-inflammatory pathways including those that promote IL-6, IL-8 and IL-1.

So what does this all mean? Combination red light therapy can help your cells work more efficiently and balance inflammation


USES OF RED LIGHT THERAPY

There is substantial research on photobiomodulation and the use of red-light therapy. Most of it covers red light at 660nm and near-infrared light at 850nm.

The majority of the effects of red light therapy as associated with its effects on cytochrome C oxidase and subsequent effects on energy in cells and balancing of inflammation.

There is evidence that red light therapy at 660nm and 850nm benefits the following conditions:

  • energy and fatigue

  • fibromyalgia

  • injury healing

  • skin health (acne, psoriasis and eczema)

  • skin rejuvenation (collagen production)

  • weight loss

HOW IT WORKS?

At Healing Hands, we have two panels that emit light at 660nm and 850nm. Sessions go for 20 minutes, with 5 minutes allowed each side for you to get undressed and comfortable. when the lights are positioned at 25-30cm from you, you will achieve 87-91mW/cm2.

In the privacy of one of our therapy rooms, you will lie on our massage table and position the panels over yourself. For best results, you should wear as little as possible, so wearing your underwear is recommended. You will also be provided with goggles to protect your eyes.

You are welcome to lie on your back for the entire session or spend 10 minutes on your back, exposing your front, and then rolling over to expose your back for the last 10 minutes. We can discuss the best option for you, based on your goals.

We recommend 3 sessions per week whilst your symptoms are at their worst, then doing maintenance sessions 1-2 weekly as needed. Much of the research suggests 3x20min sessions for 4 weeks for measurable improvements.

WHO SHOULDN’T USE RED LIGHT THERAPY

To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of damage to biological tissues with red light therapy, however, red light therapy should be used only after discussion with your medical professional if you have epilepsy or active cancer. We also do not have sufficient evidence to support the use of red and near-infrared light therapy during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding. Similarly, if you are currently taking immune-suppressing medications, we recommend you speak with your medical doctor before using this therapy.
